The Cap that Mother Made
Retold by Alice O'Grady and Frances Throop
illustrated by Esther Friend 1967
This is a blast from my childhood. I remember reading this one over and over! Based on a Swedish fairy tale, when Anders' mother knits him a new hat he goes out at once to show it off. But the hat is so wonderful that everyone he meets tries to trade, buy, or steal it from him. In the end even the king offers his crown in exchange. But Anders runs straight home to his mother because nothing could make him give up the cap that his mother so lovingly made for him.
