I recently was reminded of this book and how much my kids loved it.  The pictures are really cute and I can still remember Madeleine and Henry and eventually Charlotte laughing at the antics of the animals.  Elmer Blunt is in a rush for work one morning and leaves the door to his house ajar.  A group of curious woodland animals (look how cute their faces are!) make their way inside.   The ending even has a little nod to the Bremen Town Musicians folk tale

 Madeleine brought this book up last night and was remembering all the silly stories that made her laugh as a child.  So we had to read a few out loud again!  They come from all parts of the world and are really quite silly!

Neil Gaiman spins a silly yarn about a pirate babysitter who makes "Pirate Stew" for dinner.  Made of onions and carrots, cannonballs, wooden planks, mermaid tears and other ridiculous things, beware, it will turn you into a pirate if you eat it!  Soon the house is a pirate ship sailing through the sky and finding a donut shop to pillage.  The children charges are savvy and Gaiman's rhymes are fun to read aloud.

(We actually have a dish we call "Pirate Stew".  It's beef and potatoes and a little bit of everything made in the crock pot.)
