Marguerite de Angeli's Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes

Marguerite de Angeli's Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes
illustrated by Marguerite de Angeli 1954

Marguerite de Angeli is popular for her historical fiction, especially stories taking place in the area around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she lived.  In this book her darling illustrations, including some full page color ones, accompany all the familiar nursery rhymes.

Mother Goose A Treasury of Best-Loved Rhymes

Mother Goose A Treasurey of Best-Loved Rhymes
edited by Watty Piper
illustrated by Tim and Greg Hildebrandt 1988

All the familiar classics are here, illustrated with pictures that make me think of my childhood.  Not as charming as the illustrious Grahame Johnstone sisters, or even Eric and Lucy Kincaid, but still quite appealing in all their detail.

Love seeing biographical information about the artists!  (Also, the editor "Watty Piper" is not actually a real person.  It was the name that Arnold Munk came up with to use in publishing children's books)

Tail Feathers From Mother Goose

TAIL FEATHERS FROM MOTHER GOOSE THE OPIE RHYME BOOK
Iona and Peter Opie 1988

A real gem of a collection of nursery rhymes and children‘s chants. Iona and Peter Opie were collectors and scholars of folklore, rhymes, and children‘s literature. Their massive collection was aquired by the Bodleian library at Oxford. How I would have loved to roam their house! Each rhyme is illustrated by a different artist (such as Quentin Blake, Marc Brown, Babette Cole, Jan Ormerod, Helen Oxenbury) so each page is as varied as the next. I’m a sucker for good word rhymes and have my own humble collection of Mother Goose and the like. There’s a wonderful introduction by Iona and also little bits about the origin of the verses or definition of old words.

This is a book of cordials and simples. The rhymes and their accompanying illustrations provide comfort for the heart or an antidote to melancholy, fit for adult or child.
