Another Petersham book from our collection!  This one is a set of seven animal stories centered around bedtime, perfect for night time reading.  The pictures are just as cute as can be!

A Little Book of Prayers

 I have a friend who owns a lovely little shop in Glenside called "The Nest".  She also does estate sales, one of which I went to last weekend.  Since she's also a fellow book lover, she always steers me to the best books.  Needless to say, I came home with some new (old) treasures!  

Continuing to collect Maud and Miska Petersham, their blue illustrations are the highlight of this 1941 book of prayers for children.

Maud and Miska Petersham are fun illustrators to collect.  Their work is always so bright and colorful.  I've noticed that thrift stores tend to have many of their books.

Auntie Katushka makes the most delicious poppy seed cakes (with poppies she's brought from the old country) for little Andrewshek.  But he never can seem to obey her when she tells him to keep an eye on things!  Anderwshek reminds me a bit of Astrid Lindgren's Emil.  A little boy who doesn't intend to be naughty, but gets into mischief easily!  The other stories involve a little girl named Erminka and her beloved red boots that seem to be the source of her trouble!

 Merry Christmas!  How about a vintage book illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham?  It has Christmas themed poetry and short stories and even includes some Hanukkah ones!

The Ark of Father Noah and Mother Noah

We are insanely busy this week with our church's summer camp, but having such a ball with it.  A couple weeks ago my husband and I had a chance to go to the movies (a rare treat indeed!) and we saw the new Wes Anderson movie "Moonrise Kingdom".  The story was cute and the colors were beautiful- if you like Wes Anderson films then you'll love this one.  A recurrent theme in the plot is a flood and there's even a church performance of the story of Noah's Ark.

Here's a decidedly unbiblical version (it's explained that Noah built the door too small and all the big dinosaurs and mammoths had to be left behind) fantastically illustrated by the Petershams.

The Christ Child

I seem to be on a vintage Christmas kick.  We just have so many wonderful books that are beautifully illustrated.  This one you may recognize as the same illustrators as The Rooster Crows.
