A Lion to Guard Us

Another vintage Weekly Reader book snatched from the thrift store.  I originally thought the pictures were by Mercer Meyer, but despite my mistake, it's still a nice addition to our library.  I was not familiar at all with the history of the Sea Adventure and it's journey to Jamestown in the 1600's.  This fictionalized version told through the eyes of a girl and her younger brother and sister definitely piqued my interest.

A Lion to Guard Us
Clyde Robert Bulla
illustrated by Michele Chessare 1981

In the early 1600's a trio of siblings are working in a manor house while their father is in America as an early settler of Jamestown.  When their mother dies, the three must decided how to change their fortune and make their way to the new world.  The death of their guardian, storms, and a shipwreck don't make it easy for them!
