Another fun book about the house and family life that Jonathan Bean grew up in.  I always wanted to homeschool my own kids.  Though they went to public school, we took a lot of days off to go on field trips to museums and the creek and I like to think that they grew up in a house filled with encouragement for curiosity and learning.

I think I love Bean's books because they are the kind of chaotic, joy-filled, adventurous, a little bit unconventional family life that I want (and sort of grew up with)!

Building a House

We bought this book at Charlotte's book fair this year and I love it!  The story is about a family that packs up and moves to the country where they build their house from scratch.  It takes a few years (they live in a little trailer in the meantime) and a lot of hard work, but what a beautiful sense of community, environmental responsibility, and self-sufficiency they have.  The best part is, the story was based on the author's true experience of his parents building their house when he was a child.
