Georgie
Robert Bright 1944
This sweet ghost story from 1944 was reprinted in one of my childhood favorites The Tall Book of Make-Believe. Robert Bright does the illustrations here in a black and white sketchy style. But the story is exactly the same about a friendly little ghost named Georgie who haunts the home of an old couple. He squeaks the door and creaks the stairs and then Mr. and Mrs. Wittaker know it's time for bed and their cat to prowl and the owl to wake. But when Mr. Wittaker decides to oil the door hinge and fix the stair he unknowingly drives Georgie out to find another place to haunt. This is nice non-spooky Halloween story.
