Sometimes only gentle illustrations will do. The story of Snow White and Rose Red (the enchanted bear and the villainous dwarf) published in 1967. As I get older I find myself more and more drawn to soft sweet pictures such as these by Marjorie Cooper.

The Myth Atlas
Just picked this up at the bookstore. It's amazing! The gods and myths of twelve major regions are illustrated and explained. I found it fascinating, and I really liked the style of the illustrations too. Each region has it's mythological world and inhabitants showcased and identified. A couple main myths are retold as well as some extra tidbits of information. And there's a handy pronunciation guide in the back (especially helpful for those Celtic names!). I've been pouring over this one for two days!

Tommy and Dee-Dee
What a fun vintage book about two little boys, one from China and one from the United States. First their differences are shown- how they write, how they read, how they eat. Then we learn about the things that they have in common. Published in the 50's, I just love the illustrations and the sweet sentiment of how we can be curious and learn about our differences while still finding common ground.

Bear and Wolf
A tender story of friendship between a bear and a wolf. They meet one night in a snowy wood and decide to walk together. The illustrations feel like chalk or crayon and although simple still manage to evoke care for these two animals who explore their winter world together. As they go their separate ways, you know they are going to meet as friends again.
