The Funny Bunny Factory

The Funny Bunny Factory
Adam Green
illustrated by Leonard Weisgard

A gorgeous, oversized gem illustrated by Leonard Weisgard.  Each page is such a rich colorful work of art!  Written in a repeating, list making style great for reading out loud.  And it is a pretty silly story!

The Easter Bunny That Overslept

The Easter Bunny That Overslept
Priscilla and Otto Friedrich
illustrated by Adrienne Adams 1957

There's something so charming about the soft colored detailed pictures in this book. The story is about a time when the Easter bunny overslept and missed delivering his eggs on Easter day.  He tries to deliver them at other times but no one wants "Fourth of July eggs" or eggs at Halloween.  He eventually finds himself helping Santa Clause and getting a very "timely" Christmas gift that helps him make the next year's Easter a big success.

Songs for a Child

Recently I picked up some stellar vintage picture books.  This one is a songbook with many classic poems put to music.  But what really makes it sing are the bright, beautiful pictures by Ninon.

Oxford Book of Poetry for Children

Oxford Book of Poetry for Children
compiled by Edward Blishen
illustrated by Brian Wildsmith 1963

"...but a point about poetry (and no book must ever be allowed to suggest otherwise) is that there is a great richness and exciting quantity of it.  This is a gathering, the gathering one collector might make on one beach on a single morning.  I hope it will be found an enjoyable gathering- but I hope, too, that no one will suppose it is anything more.  Behind each poem in this book are countless others, there for the looking: and my hope is that you will want to look for them- that this book, when it has done its work of giving pleasure, will go on to do its even more important work of making you impatient for more."

Spring is a New Beginning

Spring is here in quiet, sweet ways.   Like the tiny violets that are along the stone wall, or the crowd of daffodils that line our front walk.  As Joan Walsh Anglund says "Then all the world is leafy-tipped and new."

This is My Home, This is My School

This is My Home, This is My School
Jonathan Bean 2015

Another fun book about the house and family life that Jonathan Bean grew up in.  I always wanted to homeschool my own kids.  Though they went to public school, we took a lot of days off to go on field trips to museums and the creek and I like to think that they grew up in a house filled with encouragement for curiosity and learning.
I think I love Bean's books because they are the kind of chaotic, joy-filled, adventurous, a little bit unconventional family life that I want (and sort of grew up with)!
